Building Maintenance Helper - Plumbing & Electrical

Reports to:

Journeyperson Plumber and/or Journeyperson Electrician

Location:

Various building sites across Ontario (residential, commercial, or industrial)

Hours:

40 hours per week, including one weekend every two weeks

Job Summary:

The Building Maintenance Helper will assist in a wide range of maintenance, repair, and installation tasks related to
plumbing and electrical systems in buildings. Working under the direct supervision of a licensed journeyperson, this role
provides hands-on experience in maintaining essential building systems, offering an excellent opportunity to learn and
grow in the trade.

Responsibilities and Qualifications

  • Assist in inspecting and maintaining plumbing systems, including pipes, drains, faucets, toilets, water heaters, and addressing other plumbing issues.

  • Perform preventive maintenance tasks such as cleaning drains, testing water pressure, and maintaining sump pumps, following industry standards in Ontario.

  • Help troubleshoot and repair electrical systems, including lighting, outlets, switches, and breaker panels.

  • Conduct routine inspections of electrical systems for signs of wear, damage, or code violations.

  • Shadow journeypersons on major projects to gain insight into project scope, planning, and execution in accordance with Ontario’s building regulations.

  • Assist in routine checks of building systems to ensure they operate efficiently and safely
  • High School Diploma or equivalent (required).

  • Basic knowledge of plumbing and electrical systems (an asset).

  • 2 years of experience or training in building maintenance or related fields.

  • Strong knowledge of building codes (an asset).

  • Certifications in WHMIS, Working at Heights, and Confined Space.

  • Good physical condition, capable of lifting heavy materials and working in various environments (e.g., confined spaces, heights).

  • Accuracy in following instructions and a willingness to learn new technical skills.

  • Ability to assist in identifying and troubleshooting system malfunctions under guidance.

  • Effective communication skills for collaborating with journeypersons and other team members.

  • Demonstrates reliability, punctuality, and a strong desire to learn the trade.

Work Environment
